Bring the best of you to paper.
Jonny and Giles have helped dozens, if not hundreds, of job seekers rework their CVs. There's no single correct format: some recruiters demand one page, others want more detail. We lean towards detail, but do whatever works for you.
Free CV template 202601Give context on your employer
Unless you work for Google, the reader may never have heard of your company. Add one line under each employer: ownership, location, industry, headcount and revenue.
Example & Example Ltd are a private-equity-backed business based in Bristol, specialising in logistics. They employ approx. 250 staff with annual revenues of £40m.
02Don't be afraid to tell the truth
If you've finished a role, say so, with the month you left. It opens you up to immediate-start opportunities, permanent or contract, that you'd otherwise be overlooked for.
Time out to care for family, travel or recharge? Add a line. Interviewers are human too.
03Include more detail
"Management accounting", "tax returns", "month end" don't cut it. What exactly was your involvement? What steps did you take, and what were the timelines, volumes and systems?
04Lead with achievements
Employers want achievements, not a copy of your job description. Use facts and figures wherever possible, and put them in a section on your first page.
05Don't let AI write it for you
AI is a brilliant tool, but recruiters read hundreds of CVs and can spot when they all sound the same. The aim is to stand out.
Interviews are a two-way street.
Times have changed for the better. You now have the power to put your prospective employer under the spotlight too.
01Questions. Questions. Questions.
You'd be amazed how many candidates arrive without questions. This is your chance to show genuine interest and to find out whether this is really the right opportunity for the next few years. Ask about the areas that matter to you directly, and you'll remove the uncertainty come decision time.
02Be a STAR
For "give me an example of…" questions, structure your answer in four steps. Tap each letter below to see it in action on a classic question: tell us about a time you dealt with an unsatisfied customer.
03Be yourself
"Culture fit" is a term bandied about a lot, and it's often a reason for rejection without explanation. The fix is simple: don't pretend to be someone you're not. If you change who you are to get hired, you'll have to keep that "new you" going in the job. Be yourself in the interview and you'll get to be yourself in the job too.
